MANILA -- Popeyes is back in the Philippines, officially opening at Arcovia City in Pasig on Thursday, May 16, starting at 10 a.m.
The American fried chicken chain was brought to the country by the Kuya J Group, with the partnership between the two firms announced early this year.
Popeyes is not named after the popular sailor man cartoon, but the restaurant has made a name for itself for its southern-style fried chicken (mild or spicy) paired with buttermilk biscuits or seasoned Cajun fries.
Adjustments were made for the Filipino market, of course, with prices that won't burn a hole in the pocket.
Aside from biscuits, customers can enjoy Popeyes fried chicken in different ways -- with sweet-style spaghetti with hotdogs (P125), with rice and mashed potato (P115), with rice and fries (P105), and rice and soup (P129), with spaghetti and a biscuit (P145), or as a two-piece meal with rice (P167), and a drink.
Popeyes' Chicken Tenders were given the same treatment and can be eaten with either biscuits (P137), with rice (P120), with fries (P125), with spaghetti (P129), or with spaghetti and a biscuit (P145), and a drink.
Bucket bundles, which are similar to what is sold in other fried chicken joints in the country, can also be ordered by families and groups at Popeyes. Prices start at P499 for a set with six pieces of chicken and three servings each of rice, spaghetti, and drinks.
Craving for a sandwich? Popeyes has the Chicken French Quarter (P165), a hefty handheld that has chicken fillet, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and mayo. There is also the smaller and cheaper Chicken Burger (P92) and the seafood options Shrimp Burger and Fish Burger (P149 each). All sandwiches come with fries and a choice of drink, with the option for an upsize.
Side dishes come in the form of Cajun fries (P42), mashed potato (P42), Cajun rice (P35), creamy crab soup (P50), and white rice (P25). The Philippines-only Popeyes Spaghetti, on the other hand, is priced at P66 and comes with a drink.
Dessert is pretty straightforward with the usual soft-serve (P17), sundae topped with chocolate, caramel, or strawberry syrup (P30), soda float (P40), and biscuits glazed with honey (P45), white chocolate (P55), or hazelnut sauce (P55).
The biscuits are already good on their own, especially when served warm, but the add-ons are ideal for those with a sweet tooth. Boxes of three are available at P120 for the honey variant, and P150 for the assorted set.
And in true Filipino fashion, a station for utensils and gravy can be found in Popeyes branches.
