MANILA -- The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is open to donations from the public for caretakers and animals housed in its Animal Rehabilitation Center in Loyola Heights, Quezon City during the government-imposed lockdown in light of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
“We would be grateful for whatever support you can provide for the shelter animals and our devoted caretakers who look after them during this time,” the non-profit organization said on its website.
The cost of treating and rehabilitating the animals, and running the shelter and clinic are solely funded by donations.
The shelter houses over 500 dogs, cats and other rescued animals each year. Currently, there are 235 cats, 74 dogs, and 4 Taal volcano eruption-rescued goats in the shelter.
PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera said those who have resources to spare may donate cat food, which is the shelter’s priority for now since its supply is running low.
She explained some pet products suppliers, such as Pet Warehouse, have waived their delivery fees for purchases made by donors.
“I know it’s a hard time for everyone hindi lang sa hayop, pati sa tao, but those who can spare a bit of donation baka pwede din sila um-order sa mga pet food suppliers. Merong Pet Warehouse and they can deliver for free sa amin. If they can go to Pet Warehouse on Facebook, makakapag-deliver ito ng pet food.
“So kailangan namin ngayong ng cat food more than dog food. Pwedeng pa-deliver sa PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center sa Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City,” Cabrera told ABS-CBN News.
Most of the operations of the shelter have been suspended, including its adopt-a-pet program. This adds to the current burden at the shelter.
“Kasi we have live animals in the shelter, so hindi naman pwede tumigil 'yung operasyon kasi nandoon naman sila. Medyo hard-hit kami kasi we depend on people visiting to adopt the animals, and then also nagpapa-spay/neuter or kapon for the clinic.
“But since sarado ngayon lahat so it’s only the animals there plus 'yung aming 4 caretakers and 1 gate boy. Sila 'yung inaasahan namin to take care of the animals now.”
PAWS also welcomes donors who wish to send in donations for the 24 Taal volcano eruption-rescued horses being shelterd by PAWS in Lipa, Batangas.
“If they have access to the internet, 'yun pong ordering nun pong ‘halong Taal’ -- 'yun 'yung horse feed -- pwede pong ipa-deliver sa Department of Agriculture sa Region 4A, andoon po ang mga kabayo, para meron din po silang maibigay doon sa rescued horses.”
