MANILA – A dog that has been stuck on Taal Volcano island for several days was finally rescued by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

In a video released on Wednesday, PETA said Pedro’s leg was caught in vines as he was “desperately searching for food and water” on the island.

The dog could no longer walk as his leg has gangrene, described by Mayo Clinic as the “death of body tissue due to either a lack of blood flow or a serious bacterial infection.”

Pedro was picked up by a PETA volunteer and was brought to safety, with the dog drinking “nearly two liters of water” after being stranded for days.

During their trip to the vet, Pedro showed signs of exhaustion and took a while to wake up.

In a Facebook post, PETA assured that Pedro is “now safe,” but his leg might need surgery soon.

It also asked the public for help through donations, or by offering their homes to the animals.
