MANILA -- For the meantime, let's call it "Code: 214" but rest assured, the still-untitled musical featuring the compositions of Rico Blanco will be staged by 9 Works Theatricals this August.
This was confirmed by 9 Works' artistic director Robbie Guevara to ABS-CBN News on Monday.
Guevara is also writing the book of the musical.
Shrouded in mystery like the real meaning of "214," the new original rock musical was floated on social media late last year. A teaser poster features Blanco's photo in a contemplative mood wearing a blue suit standing beside a street lamp.
The theater company held auditions for its two unnamed musicals for its 2020 season on November 26 and 27 last year. The audition teaser stated: "Our 2020 season will rock Your Universe, All At Once."
"Your Universe" was part of Blanco's eponymously titled solo album released in 2008, after he bolted from Rivermaya.
"All At Once" is a hit song by Whitney Houston, which fueled speculations that 9 Works is also mounting "The Bodyguard," which features the songs of Houston, and was first staged in 2012 at London's West End.
Auditionees were asked to sing an OPM song from the 1990s, the decade when local bands led by the Eraserheads and Blanco's Rivermaya, among many others changed and shaped the local music industry.
This is not the first time 9 Works will be staging an original jukebox musical. In 2018, the company staged "Eto Na! Musikal nAPO!" which featured songs by the Apo Hiking Society.
Will Blanco play a major role in the yet-to-be-named musical? Having proven his acting skills on television -- think ABS-CBN's hit series "Imortal" -- Blanco starring in a musical featuring his compositions could be theater history in the making -- meta theater at its finest.
Guevara, who also wrote and directed "Eto Na! Musikal nAPO!," gave no further details.
