MANILA — Ynez Veneracion was instantly in tears after her performance Monday as one of the celebrity contenders of Tawag ng Tanghalan, saying she was relieved she finished her number without the dreaded striking of the gong.

In the singing competition, the sounding of the iconic gong means instant elimination. That’s upon the signal of a head judge who visibly counts mistakes, like the singer going off-tune, or forgetting lyrics, among others.

Veneracion was one of four celebrities who took the stage Monday, alongside theater actor and radio DJ Markki Stroem, singer Hannah Villame, and actor DJ Durano.

Veneracion, who rose to fame in the late ‘90s for her sexy roles, performed her personal favorite, the Gary Valenciano version of Sugarfree’s “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak.”

Right after her number, Veneracion was seen covering her face to contain her emotions.

“Hindi nila ako ginong,” she said, when asked by host Vhong Navarro why she was crying. “Kasi sabi ko talaga, maitawid ko lang. Sige sasali ako, palakasan na lang talaga ng loob!”

Head judge Dulce noted that Veneracion did have off-key moments, but had an aspect of her performance worth commending.

“Kahit na may mga narinig tayong mga flats, hindi ko magawang bumilang, sa totoo lang. ‘Yung sinabi mong maitawid lang, actually hindi gano’n ang nangyari, e.

“The emotion you gave to the song is consistent. Ayokong bulabugin ‘yon. Ayoko siyang i-bother with bilang. That’s how I feel… ‘Sing to express, not to impress,’ and that’s what you did,” she told Veneracion.

In the preceding, debut week of the celebrity edition of Tawag ng Tanghalan, former “That’s Entertainment” star Shirley Fuentes was eliminated via gong — an indication that judges weren’t going easy on their colleagues in showbiz.

While Veneracion on Monday did manage her goal of being spared from the “gong,” she came short of earning enough score to win.

Her batch’s victor was Stroem, who will face off with other winners to be named celebrity champion of Tawag ng Tanghalan.
