Angel Locsin belied the impression of some fans that celebrities who attend the annual ABS-CBN Ball wear gowns or suits for free, in exchange for the exposure of the designers behind the outfits.

Locsin made the clarification in response to a follower who questioned her decision to skip the September 14 ball. The star of “The General’s Daughter” had said she would rather donate the amount she would have spent for her red-carpet look to the beneficiary of the event, Bantay Bata 163.

On Twitter, that follower surmised that “everything is sponsored” at such a high-profile event like the ABS-CBN Ball, in reaction to Locsin’s explanation for her absence from the annual gathering.

“The dress, hair and makeup, even hotel na stayan nila. Unless KKB (kaniya-kaniyang bayad) na ngayon? At hindi provided ng mother studio nila,” the follower said.

“Says who?” replied Locsin.

“You mean you don’t get to borrow gowns from designers for this occasion?” the fan asked. “As a celebrity, and you being a big star, for sure designers would love to see their dress worn by you.”

Locsin answered: “Minsan. But sa dami ng a-attend sa ball, lalo na may theme pa, magkakaubusan din. Saan ba nanggaling ‘yung impression mon a parang ang privileged ng mga artista? Kung gumagastos ka pag may event ka, wala naman kaming pinagkaiba.”

“Yes, minsan may ex-deal,” Locsin added, referring to the exchange of goods or service of equal value, in this case a designer outfit for exposure. “Pero hindi ganu’n lahat ang case.”

For instance, Locsin shared that the gown she wore to the 2018 ABS-CBN Ball cost P100,000, and that’s excluding the fees of the stylist, glam team, and hotel accommodation.

“Also, hindi rin naman fair na hindi ka magbayad kasi hindi madali ang ginagawa ng team. You get my point na?” the actress said.

Responding to the fan saying it is “saddening” to pay such an amount for a gown, Locsin wrote, “Paminsan-minsan okay lang naman… Nagi-guilty lang ako.”
