MANILA — “Ang sakit,” was a common comment of those who watched Friday night the first trailer of Black Sheep’s “Open,” a film about a long-term couple who tries to save their relationship by being open to others sexually.
The trailer provides glimpses of Rome (Arci Muñoz) and Ethan’s (JC Santos) relationship on its 14th year. While Rome expects a wedding proposal, Ethan laughs off the subject, and soon enough brings up the idea of having an open relationship.
Rome disagrees but is forced to go with the setup, or lose Ethan altogether. Ethan appears to seize the new freedom by having sexual encounters with Erika (Ina Raymundo). Rome, on the other hand, tries but fails to see the benefit of having an open relationship.
At least going by snippets shown in the trailer, the setup does more harm than good to the couple’s already fading romance, with a fuming Rome confronting Ethan and later crumbling in tears as she asks him, “Kulang na kulang ba ako?”
The dramatic scene, particularly Muñoz’s anguished portrayal, generated a flood of comments on Facebook about how “hurtful” and relatable it was, with many tagging friends to see the film.
“Open,” directed by Andoy Ranay, is one of the entries in the 2019 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, which will kick off on September 13.
