Kathryn Bernardo appeared to be caught off-guard when her long-time boyfriend, Daniel Padilla, momentarily went off-script during their turn on the “ASAP” stage, asking her whether she is still in love with him.
The moment that drew shrieks from the audience happened over the weekend at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, during the “ASAP Natin ‘To: Bay Area” show staged for Filipinos based there.
The couple, known to their legion of fans as “KathNiel,” performed “Yakap sa Dilim” and “Hanggang Kailan (Umuwi Ka Na Baby).” Padilla described the latter as “my song for my lady.”
“Tagos sa ’kin ‘yung kanta na ‘yon,” Padilla told the audience after his duet with Bernardo. “Unang beses kong kinanta ‘yon, kinanta ko lang, e. Hindi ko alam na para sa akin na pala talaga ‘yung kantang ‘yon.”
Early this year, Padilla and Bernardo spent their longest time apart when she filmed the blockbuster “Hello, Love, Goodbye” in Hong Kong for a month. At the time, upon instructions from director Cathy Garcia-Molina, Bernardo was prohibited from contacting Padilla in preparation for certain scenes.
Bernardo, in interviews promoting the film, made no secret of her struggle to cope with being apart from Padilla, both as an onscreen partner and real-life confidant and partner for seven years.
Their “ASAP” stint in the US was their first stage or screen performance together since the announcement of “Hello, Love, Goodbye,” where Bernardo was paired with Alden Richards.
Initially asking the audience members who among them were in love, Padilla then addressed the question directly to Bernardo.
She answered by asking what the audience thinks, prompting affirmative cheers. Thanking their fans for participating, Padilla insisted on getting a direct response from Bernardo.
“Huwag mo tanungin ‘yung Kapamilya, Kathryn. Ikaw ang tinatanong ko,” he said, as seen in a YouTube video uploaded by fan Jacqueline Epstein.
Addressing the arena, Padilla added: “Thank you very much, pero gusto kong marinig kasi talaga galing sa kanya.”
“In love ka pa rin ba talaga sa akin?” he asked Bernardo, a video uploaded on Twitter by fan @my_maruchan shows.
“Mahal, oo naman. Super. Of course,” she answered, before obliging Padilla’s request to kiss her on her cheek.
Throughout the show, Padilla was an image of a proud boyfriend, amid the box-office success of “Hello, Love, Goodbye” and rave reviews for the acting of its lead stars Bernardo and Richards.
“Nakakabilib ang babaeng katabi ko ngayon,” he said during another segment, referring to Bernardo, “dahil ho sa kanilang pelikula na ‘Hello, Love, Goodbye’ na grabe ang success na natatanggap sa Pilipinas. Napakahusay.”
“Bal,” he then told Bernardo, “from my heart, I am very proud of you. Hindi lang ‘yon — you deserve it. Para sa iyo ‘yun. I love you.”
