MANILA -- On Friday, "Saksi," the late night newscast of ABS-CBN's rival station GMA-7, ended a little bit differently from what their loyal viewers were used to. No theme music, no lights --they wanted the focus to be purely on the screen at the back.
Sitting behind just the hosts, it showed ABS-CBN's iconic transmitter tower along Mother Ignacia in Quezon City and the network's logo, a solemn tribute punctuated by them changing their extro to: "Para sa malayang Pilipino, kaisa kami ng lahat sa pagiging saksi."
It was a rare show of solidarity, as many have pointed out, just hours after lawmakers voted against the renewal of ABS-CBN's franchise --a move widely seen as an attack on press freedom.
A collection of screenshots documenting it was shared by a Facebook user named Dawnie Tiu, crediting the page Media News Blog, and has since gone viral with more than 23,000 likes and 12,000 shares.

It was on Friday when a House committee decided to deny ABS-CBN's bid to renew its 25-year franchise, keeping the network's main broadcast platforms off the air and places thousands of jobs at risk.
A host of celebrities, including GMA-7 star Jennylyn Mercado, has spoken up on the topic, calling out those rejoicing the closure of ABS-CBN and expressing solidarity with those affected.
