MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday introduced actor Alden Richards as the ambassador of its campaign against the coronavirus pandemic.
Richards stars in an infomercial from the health department, dubbed #BIDASolusyon, which enumerates safety measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
"BIDA" is an acronym for: "bawal walang mask," "i-sanitize ang mga kamay," "dumistansya ng isang metro," and "alamin ang totoong impormasyon."
"Protektahan natin ang sarili, at mga mahal sa buhay," Richards says in a portion of the video.
As of July 9, the Philippines has logged a total of 51,754 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 1,314 deaths and 12,813 recoveries.
The DOH atrributed the increasing number of additional cases to the easing of lockdown measures as the country gradually reopens the economy.
Metro Manila remains the epicenter of the outbreak, but parts of Cebu island have been identified as hotspots, or areas with an increase of cases.
Worldwide, some 12 million people have been infected with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, with nearly 550,000 fatalities, according to the John Hopkins University tally.
