MANILA -- There was a time when Ruette Remegio, after finding gold in a printing business that earned her up to P100,000 per month, asked her father to move to a condominium unit she had planned to rent for them, from their "home" along the peripheries of Rizal Park.
Her dad refused, quipping that their would-be new place would never allow them to keep their chickens. So instead, she's been using the money she has been making to help those, like them, living in the streets.
Having been homeless herself for the majority her life, Remegio, more than most, understands the lives of those she now cares for.
And it is this admirable show of selflessness that was the focus of the newest episode of "Paano Kita Pasasalamatan," which aired Saturday on the Kapamilya Channel, iWant, and the ABS-CBN Facebook page.
It told the story of Remegio: How she grew up homeless with her family in Luneta; how she turned their life around; how she helps their fellow poor and other struggling artists; and how she once found herself facing a P2 million debt because of her mom's hospitalization.
It also showed how a former Binibining Pilipinas candidate paid for their hospital bills, how Remegio saved the life of a stand-up by giving him a badly needed break; and how that particular stand-up returned the favor via giving a bullied little person a home.
