It's time to take some of the heat off the judges and let the fans get involved: the live rounds of "Idol Philippines" has begun and the show decided to have the remaining 12 contestants battle it out to see who can do the best cover of Ryan Cayabyab songs.
It was officially kickstarted by Lance Busa, who put an amazing twist on the classic "Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika."
"Ang ganda ng naging arrangement [at] bagay na bagay sa iyo. I'm actually really happy that you chose this song," commented Regine Velasquez, adding that even though there were mistakes, it didn't matter because of how he overall delivered it.
Up next was Trish Bonilla and Lucas Garcia, who sang "Kailan" and "Sometime, Somewhere," respectively.
Vice Ganda said that both showed a different side to their talent, although the comedian noted the former looked like a "superstar."
He said: "Ang lakas na ng dating mo. Iyon po ang pinapahanap sa amin ng 'Idol' franchise. We are not just looking at the best technical singer. Pinapahanap po sa amin iyong mukhang bituin na magaling kumanta."
He also praised Garcia: "Naramdaman ko iyong puso mo. Damang dama ko iyong kanta mo."
Proving that the everyone isn't taking anything lightly, making for a very competitive first round, Matty Juniosa and Elle Ocampo rocked the stage with their well-thought of versions of "Nais Ko" and "Paraisong Parisukat."
"For both of you, I'm so happy that you guys respected the songs and you all learned it. Importante na ang mga awitin ito ay inaaral natin bago natin kakantahin," said Velasquez.
Sheland Faelnar, the self-confessed fan of judge James Reid, also had a big night thanks to her cover of "Tunay na Ligaya."
Reid described her as the "most improved contestant," and that he now considers himself a fan of her.
Dan Ombao capped the Saturday episode with his touching rendition of "Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka."
Vice Ganda told him: "You are not the best technical singer in this competition pero ikaw iyong tipong performer na kapag binuka mo iyong bunganga mo at lumabas iyong totoong boses sa puso mo, damang-dama namin.
The rest of the contestants, Renwick Benito, Miguel Odron, Zephanie Dimaranan, Fatima Louise, and Rachel Libres, are expected to perform on Sunday's live episode.
According to the show, they will be eliminating two singers per round. The results will be based on a 50/50 split between fan votes and the judges.
