MANILA – Having been chosen to sing the local version of “A Whole New World” for the new live-action “Aladdin” movie is a dream come true for both Darren Espanto and Morissette Amon.
But this opportunity did not come without any challenges for the two singers.
On Thursday, the two Kapamilya singers admitted that they actually struggled on how to make the song their own.
“This is a classic. Everyone knows this song. I guess the challenge was to make your own rendition and at the same time, not to lose the magic of the song,” Amon said.
On how they prepared for it, Amon said: "We both watched the movie just to really internalize na parang kami mismo si Jasmine and Aladdin."
They likewise shared they have yet to reach out to Lea Salonga, who first popularized the beloved tune in 1992. Nonetheless, they are hoping they made the renowned singer proud.
“Kasi siyempre ang dami pong sobrang talented na singers dito sa bansa and we are just very blessed na kami po 'yung napili to be able to give a rendition of ‘A Whole New World.’ I am just really grateful and thankful,” said Amon.
When asked if they are open to recording other Disney songs in the future, Espanto did not mince words for his reply.
“Oh yeah, of course,” he exclaimed. “This is such a big thing for both of us and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity so I’d love to do another Disney classic.”
