MANILA — John Mark Saga was not even halfway through his performance on Friday and yet already had “Tawag ng Tanghalan” judges on their feet, earning his fifth straight standing ovation in the ongoing semifinals week.
Saga, among the six Quarter II semifinalists vying for two slots in the grand finals, made headlines late last year when he became the second “Record Holder” after his 10-day streak as defending champion.
On Friday, the Cavite singer reminded viewers of the feat, as he took on the judges’ challenge of performing Styx’s “Rockin’ the Paradise” — a departure from his usual ballads — and passed the test with flying colors.
Head-banging and with a commanding stage presence, Saga also had the live studio audience standing towards the end of his number.
Before the episode of “It’s Showtime” ended, “John Mark” had become a top trending topic on Twitter, as viewers similarly sang praises for Saga.
“John Michael,” too, ranked among the top trends on the social media platform after semifinalist John Michael dela Cerna moved the judges with his performance of “True Colors.”
Also in the running for the grand finals are Girlie Las Piñas, Emil Sinagpulo, Armando Mandapat, and Rose Ganda Sanz.
The two grand finalists from this batch will be announced on Saturday, after the last round of performances.
