MANILA - The latest film by award-winning director Lav Diaz will make its world premiere at this year's Berlin International Film Festival, after it was selected as one of the entries in the main competition.
"Ang Panahon ng Halimaw" was in the latest batch of films announced Monday to have a slot in the competition, bringing the total to 23. One last entry will be announced in February to join that category.
On its official website, the Berlinale also said 19 of the 24 selections will compete for the top prizes -- the Golden Bear and the Silver Bears -- but did not yet mention which.
Co-produced by Globe Studios, Epicmedia, and Sine Olivia Pilipinas, "Ang Panahon ng Halimaw" follows a string of international accolades for Lav Diaz's work.
These include "Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan", which was screened at Cannes Film Festival in 2013; "Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis", which won the Silver Bear also at the Berlinale in 2016; and "Ang Babaeng Humayo", which won clinched the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2016.
Actor Piolo Pascual, star of "Hele", is teaming up again with Diaz in "Halimaw". In this film, he will star alongside Shaina Magdayao, Pinky Amador, Bituin Escalante, Hazel Orencio, Bart Guingona, Joel Saracho, Angel Aquino, Lilit Reyes, Don Melvin Boongaling, Noel Sto. Domingo, and Ian Lomongo.
