MANILA -- Fair warning to all you villains out there.
As glimpsed in the short teaser for the upcoming "Maalaala Mo Kaya" episode this Saturday, Jane de Leon, who is set to play Darna for a movie, has been hard at work training her punches.
De Leon was tapped to portray the life of women's boxing world champion and Asian Games gold medalist Nesthy Petecio -- and it seemed she learned how to throw some devastating blows.
According to Petecio, she personally shared with De Leon some of her signature punches when they met, and she was amazed at how quickly the actress picked up her style of boxing.
"Opo ang bilis niya po," admitted Petecio in an interview with ABS-CBN Sports. "Sabi ko nga sa kanya, 'Nagbo-boxing ka ba?' Ang bilis niyang matuto. Ang dali lang, 'di siya mahirap turuan."
Petecio did add that De Leon mainly trained under boxing coach Roel Velasco, himself an Olympic medalist.
"Ang nagturo talaga sa kanya [ay] si coach Roel Velasco po. Ang itinuro ko lang po sa kanya 'yung mostly na sinusuntok ko po, kumbaga 'yung mga pamatay," Petecio clarified.
"'Yung mga galaw ko, 'yun po ang itunuro ko sa kanya. Tapos po nag-uusap kami kung paano ako magsalita, kung paano ako gumalaw."
The episode will air this Saturday, and will document the difficulties Petecio endured on her way to becoming one of the country's most promising athletes -- mainly the lack of opportunities given to female boxers.
Petecio brought pride to the country when she won gold at the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Russia, and another gold at the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
