Mudflow prompts Semirara to suspend coal mining on energy dept's order

MANILA – Semirara Mining and Power Corp said Wednesday it suspended coal mining operations following mudflow incident in Semirara Island, Antique.

The suspension order dated Nov. 14 will be effective until all conditions set by the Department of Energy (DOE) are met in relation to the Oct. 2 incident, Consunji-led Semirara told the stock exchange. 

A geo-hazard assessment and the implementation of a DOE-approved plan to address the “apparent risk” in Casey Lake and the adjacent area near the Molave Pit should be made, the statement said. 

Mitigating measures for landslides, mudflows, flooding, storm surge and liquefaction, among others, need to be identified and approved by the DOE, the statement said. 

Geo-hazard assessment in all mining areas, comprehensive review of health and safety programs, reorganization of the safety department and the implementation a DOE-approved Health and Safety Program are also ordered for other areas of under the development and production stage, Semirara said. 

“In compliance with this directive, the Company has suspended its mining operations effective immediately,” the company said. 

“Our Company is completing these requirements for submission to DOE the soonest and is confident that the conditions for resuming operations can be speedily met,” it added.
