LRT-1 operator looks to ad revenue from app while waiting for fare hike

MANILA - The operator of the LRT-1 said Tuesday it was eyeing to augment income with ad revenues from an app it launched recently, while waiting for the approval of its petition for a fare hike.

The Light Railway Manila Corporation launched its IkotMNL mobile app, which provides information on real-time train arrivals and departures, fares as well as a chatbox for customer service.

The app, which also features tourist spots and establishments along the LRT-1 route, presents possible advertisement tie-ups with businesses, the company said. 

“If it (IkotMnl app) can give us advertising potential revenue then that will help us as well before we get any fare adjustments from our grantors,” said LRMC CEO and president Juan Alfonso.

The company said it is also willing to share the tech with state-operated railways MRT-3 and LRT-2.

LRMC said it aims to complete the extension of the railway to Cavite in 2020, and is set to start construction of one of the new train stations on Ninoy Aquino Avenue near NAIA.

“We’re starting the clearing along Ninoy Aquino Avenue so the construction along Ninoy Aquino Avenue we’ll be seeing it in the next, probably, three weeks. Right now it’s already boarded up and clearing of poles of stoplights by the Parañaque government. When that’s cleared then we can move it,” Alfonso said.
