MANILA -- Google said Friday the latest version of its mobile operating system, which runs on 2.5 billion devices, will simply be called Android 10, with a focus on security and curbing screen addiction.

Mountain View, California-based Google also dropped the dessert naming convention, which ended with 2018's Android Pie. Prior to Friday's announcement, Android users were guessing which dessert Android Q would be named after.

The name change aims to give Android a more global flavor as some users did not always understand the sequence, say from Donut to Eclair to Fro-Yo, Google said.

"For example, L and R are not distinguishable when spoken in some languages. So when some people heard us say Android Lollipop out loud, it wasn’t intuitively clear that it referred to the version after KitKat," it said.

Google also slimmed down the typeface and shrank the droid mascot in the Android logo to make it easier to read.

"The robot belongs to everyone in the community, and has long been a symbol of the fun and curiosity at the heart of Android. Now, it has a special place in our logo," Google said.

One of the security features of Android 10 is a security key built into the phone, instead of a separate device, to enable two-factor verification that is not based on SMS, Google said.

A "Digital Wellbeing" dashboard lets users customize notifications and set time limits for usage of select apps.
