MANILA -- PLDT Inc said its wireless unit, Smart Communications, would deploy the Philippines first 5G pilot network by the first half of 2019, using technology from Sweden's Ericsson.
The 5G pilot will be set up in Luzon, the country's most populous island, PLDT told the stock exchange. The Filipino carrier earlier announced a 5G research and development partnership deal with China's Huawei.
"As 5G opens up more opportunities for new services and solutions to offer to our customers, we are investing in future-proofing our network and making sure that our network is ready for 5G," PLDT-Smart Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said in a statement.
"The 5G pilot deployment will allow Smart to explore industry partnership engagements, collaborate with schools and universities,
and further develop competence in 5G," PLDT told the stock exchange.
