MANILA - Wages will depend on economic activity in a specific region, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said Wednesday, as regional boards discuss a possible adjustment in minimum pay.
Businesses in the Eastern Visayas region, for example, may not be on the same level as in Metro Manila, where the minimum wage is higher, Bello told DZMM.
Bello had said that a wage increase could be announced as early as this month after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a minimum wage review in the face of rising consumer prices.
"Kailangan ng matinding balancing diyan (It will be a tough balancing act)," he said.
Lawmakers from the Makabayan bloc recently filed a bill seeking a P750 per day national minimum wage.
