MANILA - Philippine Airlines (PAL) confirmed on Tuesday that it has also asked aviation authorities to allow it to again collect fuel surcharges as the cost of fuel continues to rise.

Cielo Villaluna, PAL spokesperson, said the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) has yet to act on their petition.

"PAL has applied for fuel surcharge before the CAB but no action has been taken," Villaluna said in a text message to ABS-CBN News.

Cebu Pacific on Monday admitted that it was seeking to collect fuel surcharges as costs balloon due to the spike in world oil prices.

The CAB ordered the removal of fuel surcharges 2 years ago as fuel costs were falling back then. But last week, the CAB said it was studying the petition of 2 local airlines to reimpose the fee amid the rising cost of fuel and the weakness of the peso.

The agency clarified that the fuel surcharge, if approved, would not be imposed uniformly but would depend on the route, the aircraft used, and several other factors.
