MANILA – (UPDATE) Megaworld Lifestyle Malls’ movie schedules for Avengers: Endgame went viral Monday after announcing that select screening times would have Chinese subtitles.
Some social media users reacted negatively to the Facebook announcement posted last April 17.
A netizen asked for a refund since a movie with subtitles is "not pleasant to watch.” Some claimed they were not advised that screening would have Chinese subtitles.
"We bought 3 tickets last week and we were not advised that our screening would have Chinese subs [subtitles]! Get those Chinese subs out or refund us our tickets!" a social media user said.
A user even "demanded" the mall operator release a version with "Filipino subtitle in all dialect based on mall locations."
While another suggested using English subtitles for "deaf Filipinos" instead.
"Tayo pa ba dapat ang mag-aadjust sa ating sariling bayan?" another netizen said.
(Should we be the ones to adjust in our own country?)
In a comment to the post, Southwoods Malls, one of Megaworld's malls, said tickets purchased in advance do not include screening time with Chinese subtitles.
"We apologize for this confusion. Tickets made available for purchase in advance do not include those with Chinese subtitles," Southwoods Malls said.
In a statement sent to ABS-CBN on Monday, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls said it has noticed a strong demand from moviegoers coming from other countries" particularly China."
"As such we have decided to make our cinemas accessible to foreign speaking moviegoers by including subtitles in select screenings of the biggest movie of the year," the statement said.
The post has garnered 4,500 reactions, 1,500 comments and was shared 3,500 times as of writing.

Some moviegoers also defended the operator's decision to screen the movie with Chinese subtitles citing the "need" for it.
"Di ko kinakampihan 'yung paglalagay ng subs [subtitles]. Kaso need ng market eh...Konting consideration sa business decision," a Facebook user with the handle Ron Naldo said.
(I'm not taking sides on the issue of adding subtitles. But there is a need for it...Please consider business decisions)
Megaworld said viewers with booked tickets who prefer to watch without subtitles may ask for a refund starting April 22, Monday.
