MANILA - One of the country's biggest business groups said Sunday it backs a "calibrated easing" of the Luzon-wide lockdown imposed to check the spread of COVID-19.

The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) said the government needs to find a way to let some industries and businesses resume operations to ease the lockdown's burden on the economy and government resources.

ECOP President Sergio Ortiz Luis said a calibrated easing would be possible with mass testing and isolation of people suspected of having the novel coronavirus.

"If we are able to test and if we are able to isolate those who are [infected] why should we quarantine and lock down everybody?," Ortiz said in an interview with ANC.

Ortiz also called on local government units, especially in Metro Manila, to set up quarantine facilities to isolate people who are suspected of having COVID-19 from the general population.

He said home quarantine measures may not be enough without proper support from the government because the infection may just spread among household members.

Ortiz said the LGU of Pasig City set a good example by using the city's hotels and motels as quarantine facilities.
