MANILA - Restituta Ariola still accepts laundry jobs at 71 and while the P1,000 pension increase from the Social Security System will help, it may not be enough to provide for her family.

Ariola queued for two hours at the SSS office in Quezon City on Friday to claim her late husband's pension, which was stopped last year. She provides for her daughter and 7-year-old granddaughter.

"Madagdag na rin po 'yun sa konsumo namin sa pagkain kulang na kulang po kami," she told ABS-CBN News.

President Rodrigo Duterte promised a pension increase during the campaign to help the poor. The first of three P1,000 payouts this months started this month, representing withheld increases from January.

Starting April, the P1,000 increase will be included in the monthly pension. The government is planning a second P1,000 adjustment within the President's term.

SSS President Emmanuel Dooc admitted that the adjustment was not a big amount.

"In absolute amount, 'yung P1,000 maliit po 'yan depende sa pangangailangan ng pensionado," Dooc said.
