As someone brought up in a Catholic family, I try to pass on the values my parents engraved in my heart to my daughter and grandsons. I believe that making God as the center in everything we do will always make a positive impact in our lives.
There are some businessmen who forget their values. Fame and fortune have taken all their attention. The initial purpose of just having enough food on the table is forgotten as soon as they reach their first million
I know that we all need money in order to make ends meet. But there is a difference between living to work and working to live. Have you ever thought of how important it is to have a good relationship with others and our Creator?
I know that people with different religions read my column each week and I would like to generalize the importance of establishing Christian values. But I believe that no matter what your religion is, we all have common goals – to love and help others and to glorify our Maker.
Here are some Bible verses which can be applied in our daily lives no matter where we are and what we do.
“Do unto others what you would like others do unto you.” (Matthew 7:12)
This is the Golden Rule.
While working, we get to interact with so many people – investors/partners, employees, customers, suppliers, etc. We always need to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes and act with respect, no matter who is superior.
It is common that customers would relay feedback regarding your products or how they were treated by the employees. In handling negative feedback, instead of getting mad or making the customer all the more frustrated, one should learn to empathize with the customer. Listen to what the complaint is about, understand what went wrong and provide a solution.
“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” (John 7:24)
I am sure that a lot of people would be guilty of judging a person by the way they look. I know of a simple man who planned on buying a Mercedes Benz. He was a contractor. He earned well, but remained humble. I never saw him change the way he was over the years. So, when he went inside the showroom, nobody went to welcome him and asked what kind of car he was looking for.
Sales agents just passed him by, not looking at his eyes. When he finally approached someone, a young salesman looked at him from head to toe and asked him if he was sure of buying a car from them since there was no car there that cost less than P1 million.
The old man handed over his “bayong” filled with cold cash! Of course, the sales agent’s face was flushed red with humiliation. The old man ended up just leaving the showroom. He was frustrated at how he was discriminated against in that showroom. As for the sales agent, he just lost a hefty commission.
We always need to respect others no matter their status in life, gender, race, or religion.
“Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. (Deuteronomy 15:10)”
Doing business always goes hand in hand in providing great customer service. If you advertise that you are giving unlimited rice and drinks for a certain price, make sure that you stick to your word. Customers expect that the succeeding “rice and drinks” to be of the same quality as the one that they were previously given.
Misleading advertisements make customers furious. You have to give what is expected from all, all the time.
When you do provide great customer service, you don’t need to spend so much to advertise because your satisfied customers will willingly do that to you by referring you to their family and friends. One satisfied customer may bring in 10 new customers. And that would eventually help your business grow.
If we always use these key principles as the basis of our business decisions, this will ultimately create a solid and reliable framework for a very successful business.
