MANILA -- Air-conditioners are built to withstand light ash fall and are safe to use in that instance, a Filipino manufacturer of AC units said Monday, as urban areas cleaned up ash from the Taal Volcano.
The AC units should be cleaned by a professional after an ash fall, regardless if the ash fall is light or heavy, said Jojo Concepcion, CEO of Concepcion Industrial Corp that makes the Kelvinator, Condura and Carrier brands.
When using AC units during an ash fall, Concepcion said the room should be sealed to prevent ash and dirt from entering. This is important because the AC recycles the air inside the room, he said.
If a service crew is not immediately available, Concepcion said the portion of the AC unit that protrudes outdoors could be washed with a garden hose.
If the aircon is not used during an ash fall, the surroundings of the unit should still be cleaned, he said.
