MANILA - The country's two major carriers said they were turning off mobile phone services in selected areas of the capital on Monday as millions throng the annual Black Nazarene procession.

Smart Communications said cell sites were temporarily shut down in parts of Pasay, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, Malabon, Caloocan and Quezon City that are near Manila.

Globe Telecom advised subscribers of a temporary loss of signal in Manila. It did not specify which areas.
