MANILA (UPDATED) - The two major telecommunications firms will turn off mobile phone services in selected areas during the annual procession of the Black Nazarene on Tuesday.

Globe Telecom on Monday said "there will be a temporary loss of mobile signal in Manila, Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Makati and other neighboring areas during the Black Nazarene procession on January 9, starting 5 a.m."

Globe said the move was in compliance with the National Telecommunications Commission's (NTC) order.

It advised its customers to follow Globe's Twitter at @talk2GLOBE for service updates.

Smart Communications Inc. said: "In the interest of public safety, we are temporarily suspending our mobile services tomorrow, January 9 starting at 5 am, in Quiapo, Manila and along the route of the Black Nazarene procession. This is compliance with the order of the National Telecommunications Commission at the request of the Philippine National Police."

"We will restore our mobile services in the affected areas as soon as we get the go signal from the authorities," the company, which operates Smart, TNT, and Sun, said.
