3 skin care myths, debunked

Finding an effective skin care routine to keep your face and body clean and smooth isn't optional -- it's essential.

This is why a lot of people tend to hop on beauty bandwagons, or believe in skin care myths. After all, it's hard not to be swayed by raving reviews and trending beauty advice.

But not every beauty lesson should be considered gospel truth. Just take for example the beauty blunders below:

Natural remedies such as applying ice cubes on the skin can shrink enlarged pores.

Genetics and aging affect the size of pores, so it's not physically possible to minimize pores just by applying ice cubes that supposedly 'tighten the skin'.

However, pores can be made to look smaller by keeping excess sebum and impurities at bay. Dirt and oil buildup inflame the skin and make pores appear bigger. Deeply cleanse skin with trusted facial products to make your pores less visible.

Overwashing your skin is okay.

The more you wash, the better? More like the more you wash, the drier your skin will be. Daily exposure to dirt and pollution, especially while commuting in the city, will push one to cleanse the skin as much as possible. But doing it excessively might compromise skin's moisture.

Try to limit cleansing to twice a day -- one in the morning and one at night only. Don't forget to apply moisturizer afterwards to keep skin hydrated and nourished.

It's not necessary to wear sunscreen on cloudy days.

UV rays are still present even if the sun isn't visible. Leaving the skin unprotected might lead to sunburn, skin aging, or skin cancer. Never forget to apply sunscreen that offers intensive protection—no matter the weather.

However, sunscreen is only one facet of skin protection. Aside from UV rays, the skin also encounters harsh environmental conditions.

Defending your skin against harmful UV rays is one thing. Protecting it against other harsh environmental aggressors—like air pollution—is a different story. According to studies, pollution could speed up skin aging and trigger skin allergies.

If you live in a pollution-laden place like the Metro, using a sunscreen that offers an extra layer of skin protection is a non-negotiable.

A great option for total skin defense? Vaseline Healthy White Sun + Pollution Protection Lotion. It has SPF 24 that blocks sunburn-inducing UVB rays and PA++ that prevents premature aging caused by UVA rays. But most importantly, it has Pollution Protection Factor (PPF) that protects the skin’s fairness not just from the sun—but also from pollution. Slather it on regularly to maintain the healthy glow of your complexion.

Nothing's wrong with asking for beauty recommendations from friends and online sources. But if you want safe and effective results, seek expert opinions first before making any major skin care move.
