Changes in weather are challenges to the body. Immunity levels may take a dip, leaving the body vulnerable to diseases. One of which is diarrhea, an inconvenience for most people who are on the go daily, rain or shine. It can affect anyone – from the youngest to the oldest member of the family.

Diarrhea is often caused by virus, bacteria, or parasite from contaminated food or water that's why it is important to strengthen your family's defense against harmful microrganisms. Prevention does not need to be complicated — it can start with simple things such as proper hygiene and a healthy diet and lifestyle. Here are five easy steps to build up the body's defenses this rainy season:

1. Keep hands clean

One of the most common ways of transmitting harmful microorganisms onto food is through dirty hands, or hands which have come into contact with contaminated surfaces or water. It is important to wash hands frequently, especially before touching food or eating.

2. Drink clean water

Contaminated water, not just food, can cause diarrhea. It is important to ensure that water is clean and free of harmful microorganisms by sterilizing or boiling it before drinking, or getting it from trusted sources.

3. Ensure food is cooked properly

Cooking helps ensure that food is free from harmful bacteria. Meat such as pork and chicken should be properly cooked at the right temperature, to make sure they are free from microorganisms such as Salmonella and E-coli.

4. Store food correctly

Wet weather can increase the chances that food will be exposed to moisture, causing food to spoil faster than usual. Prevent food from spoiling by storing them properly.

Meat should be wrapped tightly and stored in the freezer to avoid spoilage, and baked goods and other fresh items should be placed in cool, dry spaces to deter the growth of diarrhea-causing bacteria and mold.

5. Have probiotics handy at home

Diarrhea can be caused by different factors. One of them can be an imbalance in the gut flora when bad bacteria from contaminanted food and water invade/overwelm the good bacteria. Those with ‘weak stomach’ (or mahina or sirain ang tiyan as most Filipinos know) are most susceptible to this sickness. Oftentimes, anti-diarrheals are sought to address symptoms however to help restore the balance to a normal gut, taking probiotics can also be considered.

Probiotics are known for promoting a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut. According to a study by Lynne V. McFarland published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology in 2010, probiotics like S. boulardii can help prevent and ease different types of diarrhea.
